Living tradition

Tradition plays an important role for the inhabitants of Lenggries all year long. Their culture is deeply influenced by Christian religion.

The wearing of “Tracht” (the traditional costume) is something very common and it is common to wear it while attending church on Sundays. On religious holidays throughout the year, processions often take place in Lenggries, where you can see the inhabitants in their traditional costume and experience their deeply rooted culture. Old traditional costumes, sometimes dating back to the 18th century, can be seen in the local history museum as well as in the historical meeting room in the town hall.

The “Antlaßschützenkompanie Lenggries”

The “Antlaßschützenkompanie Lenggries” is a traditional association that evolved from a historic militia. In dangerous times, like during the Thirty Years’ War, the men accompanied the village priest when he had to visit remote hamlets or farms. The militia also defended the region against foreign powers. The name “Antlaßschützenkompagnie” is a combination of the word “Antlaß” which stands for the Christian holyday of Corpus Christi in the regional dialect and “Kompanie” which denotes the military subdivision of a company.

Today, the aim of the “Antlaßschützenkompanie Lenggries” is to protect and maintain their traditions and culture. Every year in May, companies from all over Bavaria meet in one place to celebrate the mother of God which is the patronsaint of Bavaria.

Throughout the year, you can see processions of the company on special occasions like the Feast of Corpus Christi.

Lenggries’ brass band

The inhabitants of Lenggries are musically gifted and there are many music- and singing-groups. The brass band of Lenggries is one of them. You can listen to their traditional brass music at their weekly concerts in the “Kurgarten” during summer months.

At so called 'Hoagascht', gatherings of musicians at hut festivals and at dance evenings, our music and singing groups delight the audience with perfection and emotion.

Associations for the preservation of traditional costumes

In Lenggries, there are two different associations which preserve and maintain the traditional costumes called “Dirndl” for the women (a “Dirndl” is a dress which consists of a close-fitting bodice featuring a low neckline, a blouse worn under the bodice, a wide high-waisted skirt, and an apron) and “Lederhose” for the men (a “Lederhose” is a pair of short or knee-length leather breeches).

The two different associations in Lenggries are called:

  • Gebirgstrachtenerhaltungsverein "Stamm“
  • Gebirgstrachtenerhaltungsverein "Hirschbachtaler“

The costumes of these associations differ in their colours: The men of “Stamm” wear a grey-dark blue jacket and stockings in that same colour. The women wear a black bodice, a dark red skirt with a white apron. The men of “Hirschbachtaler” wear a dark green jacket and white stockings, whereas the “Dirndls” of the women are green.
